FIFA 17 is coming soon and new legends might be added to Ultimate Team. With every new FIFA edition, there are new legends added to the game.

Here is a new series on Digital Fútbol where I compare two similar players who can easily be included as legends on FIFA 17 Ultimate Team. This time, I compare two of the German national team's greatest midfielders, Michael Ballack and Thomas Häßler.

Michael Ballack (Germany) or Thomas Häßler (West Germany)

Two of Germany's greatest midfielders ever are Michael Ballack and Thomas Häßler. Both players have achieved major success in their careers. Michael Ballack has won five league titles in his career, but has just come short on winning the more prestigious trophies. Thomas Häßler has won both the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship, but has never achieved anything on the club level. While both players have not had the most prestigious careers, they are remembered as two of the greatest midfielders to ever play for the German national team.

Club Honors

Michael Ballack has had a much more successful club career than Thomas Häßler. As stated earlier, Michael Ballack has won five league titles, while Thomas Häßler has never won anything with his clubs. Thomas Häßler was also a runner-up many times in his club career. Häßler came on as a substitute in the first match of the 1986 UEFA Cup Final against Real Madrid. His club at that time, 1. FC Köln, lost 5-3 on aggregate. With Köln, Häßler also came in as a runner-up in the 1988–89 and 1989–90 Bundesligas. Ballack has achieved more on club level.

International Honors

Thomas Häßler was part of the historic West German national team that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Häßler played the full 90 minutes in the national team's 1-0 victory over Italy in the final. Häßler was also part of the team that lost 2-0 to Denmark in the final of Euro 1992, but bounced back and beat the Czech Republic in the final of Euro 1996. Because of his two goals at Euro 1992, Häßler was included in UEFA's Team of the Tournament. Ballack played in two World Cups and three Euros, captaining Die Mannschaft in 2006 and 2008. Ballack was a runner-up at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His heroics against South Korea sent Germany to the final, where he was suspended and forced to miss out on. Six years later, Ballack captained Germany to a 1-0 loss to Spain at the Euro 2008 final. Thomas Häßler has 101 caps with Germany, while Ballack has 98 caps. Both players have been very influential to the team, but Thomas Häßler has had a more successful time with Germany, winning two major tournaments with them.

Individual Honors (Most Notable)

Michael Ballack was awarded German Footballer of the Year in 2002, 2003, and 2005. Thomas Häßler won the same award in 1989 and 1992. While Häßler has won the World Cup and Euros with Germany, he has only been included in one "Team of the Tournament" selection. Michael Ballack was selected to two FIFA World Cup Team of the Tournaments (2002 & 2006) and also two UEFA Euro Team of the Tournaments (2004 & 2008). Both Ballack and Häßler have been included in a FIFA XI selection, but only Ballack made Pelé's FIFA 100 list.

Who deserves to be included in FIFA 17?

While Thomas Häßler has won both the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship, Michael Ballack has had a bigger impact on German football than him. Ballack was captain of the national team and was a more important player to his squads than Häßler was back in his time.

FIFA 17 drops on September 27. Many people are excited about the new features and new players being added to the game. If new legends were included in FIFA 17 Ultimate Team, Michael Ballack would deserve to be included more than Thomas Häßler would.
